Energy, Flows, Power, and Politics Along the Berlin-Spandauer Shipping Canal
From the vantage point of our meeting spot Westhafen port opens up beneath us. Railway lines and containers intersect to form an urban industrial landscape viewed from the Putlitz bridge. From here we will explore the Berlin-Spandauer shipping canal that runs parallel to many of the railway lines emerging from the port. Over the course of 90 minutes the past and present of infrastructural sites like the Moabit Coal Power-plant will be discussed to foreground possible future scenarios based on the influx of development and gentrification. The shipping canal will lead us through the military cemetery that was once adjacent to the Berlin Wall, past the accelerated urban housing project Europa City to the Bundesnachrichtendienst (German secret service). Our tour offers a narrative that probes and connects each urban node through critical thinking and reflection.
